Borehamwood Men had a marvellous victory in their first round match in the Griffin Cup against Potten End on two rinks at Meadow Park with a 45 shots to 27 advantage.
John Roe, Don Putman and Tom Barker, skipped by Roy Edwards won 19-11, and Peter Job, Mick Glover and Colin Williams, skipped by Arthur Moseley, triumphed by 26-16.
In a mixed friendly at Mill Hill on June 9, Borehamwood succumbed to their hosts by 113 shots to 80. Of the six rinks, four lost and two drew, namely Fred Payne and Jim Townsend skipped by Tony Parker 18-18, and Carole Higgon and Bryan Mayson skipped by Neville Simons, who secured the two shots they needed to draw level, 14-14.
In Borehamwood's favourite competition, the Friday Night League, Kitcheners were the latest opposition, but again Borehamwood emerged triumphant by a whopping 54 shots to 23. The away team of John Roe, Mick Glover and Don Putman, skipped by Roy Edwards, won 29-14, and Arthur Muir, Ken Sharp and Colin Williams skipped by Arthur Moseley emerged victorious with a wonderful score of 25-9 at Meadow Park.
The Ladies were also successful in the Watford and District League with a sound win against Owls by 48 shots to 36. Irene Allen, Eileen Mason and Jean Snook skipped by Margaret Moseley, won 24-19 whilst Edna Harrison skipped by Doris Edwards showed their fighting spirit by battling back to win 24-17, after being 7-13 down after 12 ends.
In a friendly at home to Whithern on Sunday the Ladies lost a very even match on two rinks by just one shot, 38-39. The winning rink for the ladies was Ann Atkin, Peggy Pollentine and Carole Higgon skipped by Doris Edwards, who triumphed 23-18.
The Men's match against Whithern was on three rinks and although they won by 58 shots to 51, it was the team of Bill Mason, George Leslie and Arthur Muir, skipped by Don Putman with a massive 30 shots to 6 victory, who ensured overall victory as the other two rinks went down. It was just as well that the opposing team did not know that the cumulative age of that team was well in excess of 320 years! Captain Roy Edwards bowls for Borehamwood against Whithern on Sunday
