DISAPPOINTED campaigners have hit out at selfish thieves who stole a Star Wars banner from a lampost in Shenley Road last week.
An iconic image of famous character Yoda, which hung near All Saints Church, was reported missing on Friday, June 3.
The picture was installed in April as part of the First Impressions scheme, which aims to promote the television and movie history of the area.
On behalf of the project team, Bob Redman, said: “It was not mindless vandalism, which in a strange way makes it worse.
“Someone has said I want that and the rest of you can't enjoy it. That is just selfish.”
Due to its height, weight and quality, the thief is thought to have used a ladder and knife to slash the banner down.
Mr Redman said the First Impressions team were disappointed, but sadly not astonished, as they had expected someone to “have a go” sooner or later.
Hertsmere Borough Council, who supported the project, have reported the incident to the police and will be checking for CCTV footage of the theft.
The original Star Wars movie was filmed at Elstree Studios in 1977, and the series is known to inspire a fanatical following.
Asked if he thought this was the work of an over-zealous fan, Mr Redman said the person could not call themselves a true enthusiast - as they would respect the hard work it takes to convince owners Lucasfilm to use its imagery.
Reflecting on the theft, Mr Redman said it opened up a bigger debate of whether local people thought the heritage project was a good idea.
He said: “It is for local people to judge whether they like what we have started.”
