A BASTILLE day ball will be held by a twin town association to raise money for a club for children to learn French.
The Borehamwood and Elstree Twin Town Association (BETTA) runs a Saturday club during school term time called Club Escargot, where children between the ages of six and 12 can learn the language.
The event is being held to raise funds to keep admission costs low for parents.
Bastille Day is a national holiday in France held on July 14. The Bastille was a prison that was used to lock up people that did not agree with the kings and queens ruling the country.
On July 14, 1789, a large number of French citizens gathered together and stormed the Bastille to overthrow the monarchy.
The Big BETTA Bastille Ball will be held on July 13 at 7.30 pm at Allum Hall, in Allum Lane, in Elstree. The event will have entertainment including performances by accordionist Roswitha Lamb, The Borehamwood Brass Band, soprano opera singer Adria Jackson, Pair Dance Community Group and children from Club Escargot.
Chairman Martine Eni said: “There will be a fancy dress competition for those who take on the challenge of dressing in Bastille Day clothing.
"There will also be a luxury French Buffet and a champagne bar, where drinks can be purchased.
“BETTA is passionate about expanding opportunities for our community.
"We are inviting people to come and support this event and, in turn, support our local children by raising funds to keep Club Escargot running.”
Tickets cost £15 and are available from emailing bettagroup@hotmail.com
