A YEAR of threats to the local environment were analysed and discussed at the annual general meeting of the Elstree & Borehamwood Green Belt Society on Thursday.
The group welcomed guest speaker Clive Glover from the Watling Incinerator Group (WING), which was set up to fight plans by Hertfordshire County Council to build a waste plant in Harper Lane, Radlett.
Mr Glover talked about strategies that led to the successful outcome of the location of the incinerator being moved to the council's originally proposed site in Hatfield.
The Elstree & Borehamwood Green Belt (E&BGB) Society actively supported WING and gave a substantial contribution toward their campaign funds.
Other topics of conversation, which the society have been involved in this year, included the ongoing campaign to stop a rail freight interchange in Park Street, plans to build four blocks of flats in Allum Lane, and the bid to save the facilities at Aldenham Country Park.
Chair of the group, Ann Godard, concluded the meeting at The Manor House, in Allum Lane, by urging members to remain vigilant and actively encourage local residents to join the society.
She said there was strength in numbers and an active membership was needed to counter the many threats and pressures of unsuitable developments, the protection of the local environment and the safeguarding of the Green Belt.
