GREEN-FINGERED children from a primary school in Elstree helped elderly care-home residents plant vegetables and flowers earlier this month.
Year four pupils from St Nicholas School got their hands dirty as they joined old folks at Elstree Lawns Nursing Home, in Barnet Lane, on May 4.
The youngsters planted runner beans, tomatoes, herbs and marrows, before painting a collage of what the word community means to them – this included their church, rainbows, their friends and their pets.
Linda Byrne, senior activities co-ordinator: “It was lovely to see some of our residents faces as they watched the children, everyone had a lovely afternoon and we look forward to eating some of the vegetables they have planted”.
The event formed part of BUPA's Community Crops day, which tries to promote the health benefits of growing your own produce and good ties with the community.
