A RUGBY match between Borehamwood and its twin town in France was the highlight of a family fun day held by the area’s twin town association.

The event at Harrow Rugby Ground, in Stanmore, which is the home of Borehamwood Rugby Club, welcomed the veterans rugby team, ASF, from Fontenay-aux-Roses for the free event.

Borehamwood and Elstree Twin Town Association (BETTA) aims to form connections with the area's twin towns including Fontenay-aux-Roses, on the outskirts of Paris, and Offenburg, in south-west Germany, near Strasbourg.

The group’s chairman Martine Eni said: “I want to thank the IBIS hotel in Borehamwood who sponsored the event and provided coffee and croissants.

"Also for the help of Tesco, St Michael and All Angels church, the Sea Cadets and shop Crystal Moon.

“We made Borehamwood proud. After a very good try from the French seniors and a long and eventful game the Borehamwood Rugby Club won 6 to 3.

New mayor of Harrow, Councillor Mrinal Choudhury, joined Elstree and Borehamwood mayor, Councillor Sandra Parnell, and Hertsmere mayor, Councillor Linda Silver, for the match.

Mrs Eni added: “The Borehamwood rugby club was very happy to have participated in this great day.

“We hope that the people watching enjoyed the visit of our twin town and hope that the activities of Betta will be promoted through our local rugby club.

“We would like to thank all who helped, who spent hours in the kitchen for the perfect organisation of the day and the return match will happen at some stage in Fontenay-aux-Roses.

“Thank you also to all the mayors who came on the day and above all to the gods of rugby who held the rain against all weather forecasts.”
