YOUNG moped riders are disturbing the peace and quiet of a historic village green in Borehamwood, says a councillor.

Chairman of the Woodcock Hill Village Green Trust (WHVGT) committee and Hertsmere Borough Councillor Pat Strack (Con/Kenilworth) says she receives daily reports from walkers who have seen youths driving mini-motos, dirt bikes and quad bikes.

She feels the incidents are happening far too often.

She said: “They are the bane of my life. Not only are they on Woodcock Hill, but they ride up and down the roads near there.

“I don't think the riders have tax and insurance and a lot of them don't even look old enough to drive.

“We had an elderly couple who were nearly smashed into last Tuesday. The motorbike was on the wrong side of the road and almost crashed into their car.”

The councillor believes parents of the young riders need to take more responsibility for their actions.

She added: “The parents buy them these bikes and they know there is no where to ride them, so why do they do it?

“The police do what they can. They have been good, but they can't be here all the time.

“We need to flag up to parents that their children are driving these bikes. They could be killed and could kill others. Parents need to take more responsibility.”

The councillor also voiced concerns for the environment, saying: “Birds are nesting at the moment and the noise and disturbance is not good for them.”

The committee chairman added: “I'm very angry about the motorbikes, sometimes we can't have all the freedom, sometimes we need to acknowledge that our freedom can impinge on others.”
