TEACHERS, who 40 years ago all taught at the same school in Borehamwood, met up for a reunion.
The staff were all working at Borehamwood Grammar School just before it became Nicholas Hawksmoor School, now the site of Hertswood School's lower site.
The attached photograph was submitted by former physics teacher David Clout, who said many readers might be surprised to see them looking so young and healthy.
Here, Mr Clout gives a brief account of the teachers, pictured from left to right:
Ewart Hopkins - who taught music and ran a very successful madrigal group which scooped awards galore at the Bournemouth Music Festival, beating choirs from well-known public/independent schools and one year performed at the National Eistedfford. Being Welsh. He was also into rugby and is remembered for getting the first 15 into his main choir to sing in Carmina Burana.
Lesley Mason - who joined the school to teach history when she was Miss Caunt. She later married Chris Mason who taught physics. Sadly Mrs Mason is now a widow, as her husband died a few years ago, having struggled with kidney failure and three unsuccessful transplants.
Chris Bowden - who taught in the craft department. He moved to Suffolk where he progressed to headship. Some students still have the wooden items, such as fruit bowls, they made with Chris.
David Clout - who taught physics. He is still in the area and uses his teaching background to act as liaison between the town's schools and the rotary club.
Ted Kimber - who taught French until Nicholas Hawksmoor School closed and Hertswood School came into existence. He too is active in the area in other capacities, in particular helping with the half marathon.
Doug Harwood - who as well as being head of CDT was known to generations of Year 3 (Year 9 today) boys because he was their year head. Students from 40 years ago might remember making a wooden magazine rack with Doug; at the time Barry Bucknall on TV was making DIY popular.
Fewer former students will remember the last person on the right. In 1971, John Francombe was deputy headteacher, working alongside the headteacher Tommy Thomas. Soon after Borehamwood Grammar School became Nicholas Hawksmoor School, John became the headteacher of Sandy Upper School in Bedfordshire.
