BIG Brother fanatics will return to Elstree Film Studios this summer after Channel 5 announced an exclusive deal with programme makers Endemol UK.

The two-year contract will kick off with a special celebrity version in August, followed by the traditional format of 'ordinary' housemates.

The future of the show had been placed in doubt when Channel 4 axed the programme after its 11th series in 2010.

However, a planning application passed by Hertsmere Borough Council in July, for continued use of filming in the Big Brother house until 2013, started speculation of a rival network taking over.

Today, Channel 5 bosses confirmed they had signed a new deal.

Jeff Ford, director of programmes, said: “We’re hugely excited to have secured the return of Big Brother for Channel 5 which will form a key part of this year’s schedule.

“The series has previously captivated a decade of television viewers and we aim to bring Channel 5’s energy, optimism and vibrancy to the series.”

With one of the most loyal fan bases in television history, it means the party atmosphere of Friday night evictions will once again attract many visitors to Borehamwood.

Edwin Nelken, chairman of Hertsmere’s Chamber of Trade and owner of Nelken Jewellers in Shenley Road, welcomed the news, but urged the council to ensure a good clean-up operation.

He said: “We are pleased to see Big Brother back in the town, hopefully with a different format because it was getting dated.

“Shopkeepers will welcome the renewed business and hope it will be the start of more productions, which will revitalise the film industry in the town.

“In the past, people have left a lot of litter in the high street and we hope the council will give it an extra clean in the morning.”

Tim Hincks, chief executive officer of production company Endemol UK, also said: “Big Brother has a passionate and loyal fan base in the UK and I’m delighted it has found a new home on Channel 5.

“Ten years on it’s as potent and cutting edge as ever and it’s still one of the only truly multiplatform entertainment brands.”
