CHRISTMAS events organised by Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council are set to kick off the festive season with a light switch-on and a performance by the BBC Elstree Concert Band.

An open invitation has been extended to all residents by town mayor, Anne Mitchell, to attend the Christmas lights switch-on in Shenley Road, on Sunday.

Festivities will include an afternoon of free ice skating behind All Saints Church, followed by carols, mince pies and hot drinks inside the church from 3pm.

At 4pm, the mayor will turn on the lights illuminating Shenley Road, Manor Way, Leeming Road, and Elstree High Street.

Mayor Anne Mitchell said: “This year, the town council has improved and developed the display of Christmas lights in Shenley Road and our other shopping areas.

“It is hoped that these will enhance the attraction to shoppers for the festive season and help our local traders in these difficult times.

“I do hope residents and visitors alike will join us on December 5 and have a look at what our shopping areas have to offer.”

Continuing the celebrations, the town council will host the BBC Elstree Concert Band at Allum Hall in Allum Lane on Monday December 13.

Along with famous pieces from films such as The Wizard of Oz and the James Bond series, there will be festive numbers with a celebration of Christmas Carols and a sing-a-long.

Tickets for the event cost £5 and are on sale at Fairway Hall between 9am and 2pm, Monday to Friday. Alternatively, call 020 8207 1382 to book. There will be a complimentary tea, coffee or soft drink in the interval.
