A Borehamwood family had a lucky escape recently when a chip pan fire threatened to destroy their home.
At 4pm on Thursday, June 17, firefighters from Borehamwood and Potters Bar rushed to the terraced house in Buckingham Road.
Using breathing apparatus, they got into the house from the back garden, and brought the fire under control. The fire caused heavy smoke, which was pouring out of the upstairs windows.
They opened all the windows, and found the fire started when a chip pan was left alone on a stove.
Sub Officer John Horner said: "The fire was very severe in the kitchen area and could well have spread throughout the remainder of the property. The close proximity to the Fire Station and speed of response, I am sure prevented the entire house becoming involved."
Fire Station Commander Barry Pryke praised the work of the crews and reiterated the importance of having a working smoke alarm.
"This family had a fortunate escape, please ensure you have a correctly sited, tested and working smoke alarm fitted."
As part of the Elstree and Borehamwood Festival, Borehamwood Fire Station in Elstree Way is holding an open day this Saturday. People are asked to come along and discuss fire safety with the crews.
