Detailed plans have been put forward for the new estate to be built at the former Lyndhurst School site in Gateshead Road.

Developer George Wimpey wants to build 152 new homes on the former school site, including 38 four-bedroom houses, 39 three-bedroom houses, five two-bedroom houses, 52 two-bedroom flats and 12 one-bedroom flats.

The buildings would be two or three storeys tall, and there would be parking and landscaping.

Wimpey is already building the former Fire Research Station 277-home estate near Melrose Avenue, where residents have been driven to distraction by construction traffic, dust and noise for more than a year.

Labour councillor Frank Ward was annoyed that only 38 of the 152 new homes were designated as "affordable housing", and said there were not enough services such as schools or police in Borehamwood to deal with the extra people.

"The infrastructure will not be able to cope at all. We don't need more people coming into the community unless it is key workers. What we don't want is private speculators coming into this town, taking advantage of any brownfield development site, and building homes in speculative developments."
