As a huge fan of the Eighties LWT drama series Dempsey and Makepeace, I was delighted to hear that Glynis Barber has begun filming a new role in EastEnders at BBC Elstree this week.
Barber, who played the role of Harriet Makepeace in the aforementioned crime series, has taken over the role of Archie Mitchell's (Larry Lamb) estranged wife Glenda Mitchell from Jill Gascoine, according to Digital Spy.
Glynis will be first seen on screen by fans of the BBC soap in January. The character’s appearance is believed to tie in with this year's major Christmas storyline that involves Archie.
No-doubt there will be some interesting scenes taking place in the Queen Vic.; and one wonders just how long it will be before Peggy shouts those immortal lines: "Gerr out of my pub!"
Barber, who recently played DCI Grace Barraclough in the ITV1 soap Emmerdale, made a huge impression when she appeared in Dempsey and Makepeace in the Eighties. The actress later married her co-star in the series, Michael Brandon.
New and established fans of Dempsey and Makepeace can still catch repeats of the series on the satellite TV channel Men & Motors from time-to-time.
I wish Glynis all the best with filming her new role on EastEnders in Borehamwood, and look forward to watching her scenes in the New Year.
