A garden party will be held in June to celebrate the history of Elstree and Borehamwood's scout groups.
Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council will host the event at Schopwick Place, Elstree High Street, on June 29.The venue was once the home of Sir Percy Everett, who played a key role in the start of the scouting movement alongside Robert Baden-Powell.Sir Percy was approached in 1908 by a group of Elstree youngsters who had heard about scouting and wanted to form their own group.Paul Welsh, town council entertainment officer, said: "We have got about 180 scouts and guides now in Elstree and Borehamwood. "It is a very good, positive hobby to have, so we want to do something to celebrate the past and make young people aware of the continuity."It will all happen right where it started 100 years ago, so that makes it quite special."As part of the activities, scouts will lay floral tributes on the graves of Sir Percy and Edward Rogers. Mr Rogers was one of the three original scouts, and died aged 21 in the First World War.The council is interested in collecting information on the other original scouts: Robert Sands, H Addington, Alfred Mason, Ernest Cooper, Charles Sharman and Herbert Crawley.Mr Welsh said: "It would be nice to use this event as a catalyst for people coming forward with material that is connected to the early days of scouting."People with information should contact Mr Welsh on 020 8207 1382.
