Residents in Borehamwood should be able to feel safe wherever they go in the town.
Routine trips to the shops, an evening stroll or walking the dog should all be pleasant experiences.
So to leave people vulnerable and feeling intimidated simply because the lighting on a path has not been properly maintained is unacceptable.
It is not good enough that a walkway has been left in the dark for two months and there is no clear date when this will be fixed.
Residents are right to demand basic safety measures so they can go about their lives without worrying about who is lurking in the shadows.
Hertfordshire County Council needs to act quickly to ensure no one is put at risk when a simple solution is available.
