A park pathway has been left partially lit for the past two months raising fears for the safety of residents in the area.

Meadow Park, next to the Boreham Wood Football Ground, has six missing lamposts around its perimeter.

The area where the lighting has been removed runs from the end of Meadow Road around the field to Broughinge Road.

Craig Norris, who lives near the park, has noticed the area has "appeared noticeably darker" in recent months.

Mr Norris said the top part of each of the six lamp posts had been taken down and the bottom half of the posts taped up.

He said: "Now with six lights removed, most of the path around the park is in darkness. It's only a matter of time before someone gets mugged or there is an assault.

"I don't understand why we have so many problems with street lights in Borehamwood. During the winter months when I walk my dog around the streets there are so many lights out for what seems like months.

"Is it our job to tell the appropriate council worker or should someone be inspecting them more regularly?"

Another nearby resident Laurie Taylor said: "There are always lots of broken alcohol bottles and underage drinkers hanging around in gangs down there, so it is not a safe place to walk through at night with hardly any lights.

"What makes it even worse are the oak trees for attackers to hide behind and there are always drunks and troublemakers hanging around, coming out of the football club at night."

Ms Taylor believes there should also be a better quality CCTV camera placed in the park.

She said: "I have heard the CCTV camera in the park is not infrared, which renders it useless at night. Also, more police patrols need to go through there in the evenings."

A Hertfordshire County Council spokeswoman said: "The columns were taken out following routine mechanical inspections on February 27 due to safety reasons.

"Hertfordshire Highways engineers have designed a new lighting scheme across the park and this is being programmed into this year's street lighting replacements.

"They have a rolling programme of replacement works year on year as the lighting stock ages. There are 16 new street lighting columns on order and the works will be carried out as soon as possible after delivery."
