So the Liberal Democrats are putting up only one candidate in six Borehamwood wards, Radlett and Shenley on May 1 (On the campaign trail', April 11).
Why, as a Conservative, does this annoy me?
I sit on the Borehamwood planning committee, on which the Lib Dems have two seats.
This committee, and council, makes important decisions concerning our area and the future plan for Borehamwood and the quality of life of its residents. The Lib Dems are the main opposition in Hertsmere with seven seats. Yet the party shows such little confidence in our towns and its voters that they are fielding only one candidate in Borehamwood, Radlett and Shenley combined. This is at a time when we are trying to encourage people to come out and vote. Gavin Whenman, a law student, is their only candidate outside Bushey. He, back in February, wanted to stand in Cowley Hill, but was withdrawn by his group leader who was reported to say that he would place Mr Whenman where he could have the "best effect".This is proof the Lib Dems are putting party politics before what is best for the voters of our area. It's a bit rich Mr Whenman telling this paper: "I am standing because Borehamwood has been let down by the Tories in nine years of unbroken rule. Borehamwood is a great place, but we can do better."Do better? Residents deserve better. They deserve all the main parties to put up candidates and they can vote us in or kick us out accordingly.Councillor Harvey CohenConservative, Brookmeadow Ward
