Oscar winner Lord Richard Attenborough was a surprise guest at a plaque unveiling at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood on Sunday. The event was held to honour the career of veteran actor, producer and director Bryan Forbes.Guests included actor Keith Barron, Dave 'Darth Vader' Prowse and and actress Sheila Sim.They joined Elstree and Borehamwood town mayor Councillor Jean Heywood and Mayor of Hertsmere Councillor Martin Saunders.Mr Forbes, who is 81, set up the production company Beaver Films with Lord Attenborough in 1959, and together they worked on The Angry Silence and Whistle Down the Wind. He also produced the original version of The Stepford Wives, and was awarded a CBE for services to the arts in 2004.Mr Forbes said: "The occasion went very well and it was an extremely well-organised event. "Dickie Attenborough is one of my oldest friends and I was surprised when I saw him there with his wife. I enjoyed the question and answer session and I think we were a reasonably good comedy duo."I was very nostalgic being back at the studios, although it is a much smaller studio site than I remember it being when I worked there. "I haven't been back for some years so was surprised at the change but felt very privileged to be there for the event."Paul Welsh, town council entertainments officer, said: "Just over 100 people were in attendance and Bryan Forbes was both surprised and thrilled when we introduced his old friend Lord Attenborough as the surprise plaque unveiler. "They proved a marvellous comedy double act with anecdotes of their many films ranging from League Of Gentlemen, which Bryan wrote and which they both starred in, to the epic Gandhi which Richard directed and won an Oscar for. "It was a great occasion to bring together two true veterans of the movie business at Elstree Studios for what proved to be a nostalgic and humourous occasion." The event included a short video of Mr Forbes' career highlights which was followed by a question and answer session hosted by Mr Welsh. When Mr Forbes married his wife, Nanette Newman in 1954, Roger Moore was best man. The couple have two daughters, Sarah, and television presenter Emma Forbes.
