A 33-year-old woman was seriously injured in an accident on the outskirts of Borehamwood this morning.
It is thought her car, a white Toyota Corolla, hit a tree after leaving the northbound carriageway of the A1, near the Holiday Inn, at around 10.30am.
Fire crews from across Hertfordshire, and one from London, were called to the scene.
The woman from Harrow, believed to be the driver of the car, was cut out of the vehicle and taken to Barnet Hospital. She was transferred to the Royal London Hospital in east London on Monday evening.
A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: "Due to the length of time the woman was going to be trapped and the injuries she had received, accident and emergency consultant David Gaunt was dispatched to the scene.
"The paramedics worked extremely hard alongside the doctor for almost one hour to stabilise her in the car before conveying her to Barnet Hospital."
The northbound lane of the A1 was closed following the incident, but has now reopened.
More soon.
