Two people have been arrested for allegedly impersonating as police officers outside a supermarket.

Police say a number of people are believed to have been approached near Sainsbury's at Colney Fields shopping park in London Colney at around 7.50pm on Friday February 11.

One man reportedly claimed to be a police officer and told a shopper to take his hands from his pockets but the shopper challenged the man and his acquaintance and they left.

Enquiries carried out by officers have revealed a second man is believed to have been approached in similar circumstances shortly after and police believe there were further victims.

The suspicious pair were later seen leaving the area in a white van. No property is reported to have been taken from any of the alleged victims.

A 19-year-old man from Welwyn Garden City and a 20-year-old man from Offord Darcy in Cambridgeshire were later arrested on suspicion of impersonating a police officer.

They have been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Detective Constable Kate Rickard, who is investigating, said: "Two people have been arrested in connection with the investigation and we’re continuing our enquiries. As part of this, we’re appealing for anyone who may have been approached in similar circumstances to please come forward.

"We’d also be keen to hear from anyone who may have seen two men acting suspiciously in the area around the time stated.

"We’d like to remind people that genuine police officers will always present a warrant card to prove they are legitimate. If you have concerns and remain unsure, you can contact the police control room on 999 to verify an officer’s identity, by giving their collar number."
