Boreham Wood produced a stunning performance as they dumped out Championship high-flyers Bournemouth to set up a fifth round FA Cup tie at Premier League side Everton.
Mark Ricketts’ first half goal secured a historic victory on the south coast live on ITV with the away side defending heroically to secure a place in the next round.
All of the club’s players and coaching staff raced across the field to celebrate a 1-0 victory they richly deserved with the jubilant 1,500 travelling supporters.
National League Wood, who are yet to concede in this season’s record breaking cup run, now look forward to a money-spinning and tantalising tie against Frank Lampard’s Everton at Goodison Park.
There were 74 place separating the two sides when they stepped out onto the pitch at the Vitality Stadium at 6.30pm but the away side showed no nerves and refused to be overawed by the occasion.
The home side even survived a penalty shout in the first half before Boreham Wood grabbed the all-important goal seven minutes before the end of the first-half.
A cross from Jacob Mendy wasn't cleared properly and it fell to defender Ricketts’ who slotted the ball calmly off the post and into the net to send a packed away end crazy.
Predicatably, the second half was mostly a backs-to-the-wall job in with young goalkeeper Taye Ashby-Hammond in inspired form lapping up crosses before making a brilliant save from Ryan Christie as he saved his close-range strike onto the post.
It was almost heartbreak as Ashby-Hammond somehow saved Phillip Billing’s rebound onto the woodwork before the ball was eventually tucked home by Jaidon Anthony – but fortunately Billing was offside and the goal was ruled out.
Bournemouth brought on their big guns including ex-England international Dominic Solanke and Norwich loanee Todd Cantwell but despite several close shaves, the Hertfordshire side, who have the second-best defensive record in England’s top leagues, held out sending the away end, who had roared their side on throughout the game, wild.
Manager Luke Garrard told ITV after the game he was “on top of the world” describing his emotions as “incredible”.
Admitting his side “rode their luck”, he said his team “worked hard” and described them as an “unbelievable group of men”.
Boreham Wood will travel north to face Everton at the club's near 40,000 capacity stadium for a midweek fixture on the week commencing February 28. It will be the club's biggest match in its history.
Wood are the only non-Premier League and Championship side left in the competition.
More than 700 clubs entered with just 16 left.
This year's incredible run has seen Boreham Wood last longer in the tournament than the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, and holders Leicester.
