Primary school pupils in Borehamwood were evacuated yesterday over fears there was a bomb on the school site.

Summerswood Primary School says the children were moved away from the school because of a voicemail message which contained a bomb threat.

Police have confirmed a call was received from the school at 7.42am on Monday (November 29) about a voicemail that had been left overnight on the school's answerphone.

The pupils at the school were cleared to safety with officers arriving as soon as possible.

Following enquiries, police say they established the bomb threat was a hoax. However, Summerswood decided to keep the Furzehill Road school shut for the rest of the day, with police carrying out patrols in the area to reassure the community.

Sarah Kneller, head teacher at Summerswood Primary School, told the Times: "I can confirm that a bomb threat was left on the school’s answerphone on Sunday night.

"The police were immediately informed and all staff and children were evacuated from the school building on Monday morning. The police attended the school and quickly established that the threat was a hoax.

"The safety of the pupils and staff at Summerwood is paramount."

Hertfordshire Constabulary says enquiries are ongoing to track down who was resposible for making the threat.
