Borehamwood Shopping Park will be transformed into a celebratory event for the second year running this weekend.

The Jewish Life Centre will be hosting its 'Chanu-kar' celebrations on Sunday promising it will be even bigger and better than last year.

Chanukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a Jewish festival lasting for eight days.

Because of the pandemic, the Jewish Life Centre decided to host a drive-in Chanukah event in Borehamwood last year, and hundreds packed into their cars and were treated to music and a traditional menorah lighting.

The drive-in celebrations will be back on Sunday but with Covid restrictions eased, people are also being invited to walk in from 5pm and enjoy the fun outside their vehicle.

Rabbi Chaim Hoch said: "After an absolutely smashing time at last year's Chanu-kar, we are back this year for Chanu-kar 2.1

"A new year, different times, even more fun. We can’t wait to see the community come together for the 10th annual menorah lighting in Elstree and Borehamwood."

In addition to last year, there will be live musical performances along with a DJ set with attendees encouraged to dance. There will also be food and goody boxes for those who pre-register. Donations are being welcomed to help cover the costs of the event.

The drive-in has already sold out with around 180 cars set to pile into the shopping park late on Sunday afternoon.

The main menorah lighting and ceremony and entertainment is expected to kick off at around 5.45pm and last until 6.30pm (November 28).

But the music is set to keep going and people from all backgrounds are invited to dance the night away all the way up until 10pm.

For those not attending but travelling in Borehamwood, drivers should be aware Theobald Street and surrounding routes are likely to be busy from around 4.30pm and into the evening.

The town centre will already be busy because the Christmas lights-switch on is set to take place outside All Saints Church in Shenley Road at 4,30pm.

Lorraine Stanley, who plays Karen Taylor in BBC soap EastEnders - which is filmed in Borehamwood - has been invited to light up the tree.

There will also be a Santa's Grotto, kids ride, and ice skating - all free - along with free tea and coffee.
