Morrisons want to make changes to the road layout at a major roundabout to make it quicker and safer for shoppers leaving its supermarket.
The supermarket chain says customers at its Borehamwood store face "significant delays" when they try and leave its car park via the Stirling Corner roundabout.
The roundabout at Stirling Corner is incredibly busy because it is on the A1, and Stirling Way, which is where Morrisons is located, is one of five exits and entrances.
Morrisons says it can improve journey times and make the junction safer for its shoppers by widening the Stirling Way exit for the roundabout.
The supermarket's planning agents have subsequently applied for planning permission from Hertsmere Borough Council to make a change to the road layout.
The proposal is to remove one metre of grass verge on the approach to the exit, which Morrisons says will create enough space for two separate and clearly marked lanes as drivers come around the bend and onto the roundabout.
The left-hand lane would be for motorists travelling north on the A1 while the right-hand lane would be for all other exits at Stirling Corner.
Currently, there is only one official lane out of Stirling Way onto the roundabout, although the road flares to allow two vehicles to sit side-by-side as "frustrated" drivers wait to exit the roundabout.
Morrisons says its proposal will allow three vehicles to sit side-by-side and allow two vehicles to leave at the same time safely.
The transport statement submitted to the council says the scheme will reduce the risk of collisions, reduce idling time, and reduce the levels of congestion in Stirling Way.
There would be no traffic lights installed at this exit as part of the proposal.
If the plans are granted, Morrisons would pay for the scheme to be implemented.
Agents Bryan G Hall, which is a consulting civil & transportation planning engineers firm, concluded: "The scheme will improve the safety and efficiency of those entering the Stirling Corner roundabout from Stirling Way by providing an extended two-lane section on the approach to the roundabout as opposed to the existing single lane layout which only has a short flare.
"The scheme will reduce the levels of congestion and reduce the chance of collisions occurring."
The plans can be found on the council's planning portal. The application reference is 21/2099/FUL
