A man who was critically injured in a house fire in Borehamwood has died in hospital, a neighbour has confirmed.
Afriyie Amponsem passed away from his injuries towards the end of last week after he was airlifted to hospital on Monday following the fire in Allerton Road.
The emergency services were called to the property in Borehamwood shortly after 11am on September 20, with Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue sending eight appliances to the scene.
Mr Amponsem is believed to have been the only person in the house at the time and he was rescued by firefighters before being placed in an air ambulance and taken to hospital.
He is believed to have died from the injuries he sustained in the fire between September 23 and 24, and neighbour Sophie Yershon, who has been supporting the family, told the Times that she had been sadly informed the father-of-four had died.
Mrs Yershon said: "It is with great sadness that I inform you with the permission of his family that Afriyie has passed away. The family are grateful for everything and grieving their huge loss."
After news of the fire broke, the Borehamwood community donated goods like clothing and electrical items with the collection of donations at Mrs Yershon's home in Allerton Road.
Mrs Yershon said the fire had totally destroyed the Amponsem's family home and they would have likely lost all of their possessions.
So many donations flooded in that Mrs Yershon said no more was needed but she is hoping a fundraising page set up to support the family can reach £1,000.
So far, £610 has been raised for Mr Amponsem's wife Victoria, daughter Gloria, and his three sons, who were not living at the family home at the time of the fire. Mr Amponsem was also a grandfather.
Mrs Yershon added: "Weʼre raising £1,000 to help a wonderful family and the victims of a terrible house fire get back on their feet
"The community have shown incredible support but we want to raise as much as possible to give this lovely family a small start towards their healing."
The fire service has been investigating the fire at the house, which has been bordered up.
After the fire was extinguished at around midday on September 20, forensics were sent in along with a specialist dog.
Police have confirmed to the Times that the incident is being treated as non-suspicious and that its officers no longer have any involvement in the investigation.
