Roadworks along a busy road of Borehamwood could cause delays for motorists for nearly a month.
Temporary multi-way traffic lights have been installed in Elstree Way.
Hertfordshire County Council's contractors Ringway are carrying out repairs and relaying the footpath near the junction with Bullhead Road.
The work is scheduled to be completed by August 18 but there is hope it might be done sooner.
Ringway says the work has been delayed until the summer holidays where it is hoped there will be less traffic on the road and therefore less disruption.
However, there have been queues approaching the roadworks, particularly from the Brook Road roundabout.
The traffic lights are only likely to be in place while workmen are on scene.
