A new town mayor for Elstree & Borehamwood has been appointed.

Councillor Farida Turner, who is a Conservative town and borough councillor in Borehamwood, has taken on the civic role for the second time in her political career.

Cllr Turner previously served as town mayor in 2008 and she was sworn in for her latest term, at Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council's annual council meeting on May 4.

Accepting the honour, Cllr Turner promised she will do the "very best" she can to serve the residents in the community.

She also thanked outgoing mayor, Cllr Simon Rubner, who had spent the last two years as town mayor.

In particular, Cllr Turner praised Cllr Rubner's work at the Covid vaccination centre at Allum Hall, and the charitable work he has done with Gratitude and Goods for Good, especially during the pandemic.

Councillor Sandra Parnell has retained her role of deputy town mayor for the municipal year. Her role will be to continue to represent the town council at functions and events, and deputise for Cllr Turner where necessary.

At the meeting on May 4, it was mentioned that 2020 had been an "unprecedented and challenging" year for the town and the council.

Town council clerk Huw Jones says members and officers are looking forward to a resumption of civic events and entertainments in the coming year for the enjoyment of local people as lockdown restrictions eased.
