Lidl is set to relocate into a bigger unit at Borehamwood Shopping Park, the supermarket chain has confirmed.
The budget chain has secured the former Debenhams site which will see the company move across the shopping park from its current smaller site next door to Boots.
Lidl has submitted the necessary licensing applications on Hertsmere Borough Council's planning portal, with a notice also stuck on the door of the vacant Debenhams unit.
Debenhams shut its doors permanently in Borehamwood in April last year after the company said it "failed to agree terms with its landlord".
Lidl has seized its opportunity on the empty Debenhams store in Borehamwood, with the new site including 1,407sq m of sales area, rivalling the Aldi store which opened in 2019.
Regional head of property at Lidl GB, Mike Devine, said: "We are delighted to confirm our plans for Borehamwood and hope to open a bigger replacement store in the retail park, which marks another milestone in our ambitious store expansion programme.
"We’ve seen incredible demand for Lidl stores across the country and look forward to offering our quality products and incredible value to shoppers."
No opening date for the new store in Borehamwood Shopping Park has been set but Mr Devine says he is "looking forward to sharing more information with the community in due course".
Despite the expected move into larger premises, Mr Devine confirmed to the Times Lidl is still "committed" to bringing a second store to Borehamwood, after securing approval in October for a new supermarket off Elstree Way.
Subject to completion of a section 106 agreement, Lidl has permission to build on the site of the 6,320 sq metre warehouse, formerly home to Donatantonio in York Way.
Ninety jobs are set to be created, including 50 at a warehouse which will be built alongside the supermarket.
