Struggling retailer Debenhams has confirmed its Borehamwood store has shut for good after the company said it "failed to agree terms with its landlord".

The store in Borehamwood Shopping Park is currently closed due to restrictions arising from the coronavirus pandemic.

But when shops around the UK are given the all-clear by government to reopen, it will not include Debenhams in Borehamwood.

A company spokesperson said: "Sadly we have been unable to agree terms with the landlord in Borehamwood and as a result this store will not be reopening when government restrictions are lifted.

"We greatly regret the effect on our colleagues, who have served our customers in Borehamwood with commitment and dedication. In the meantime our customers can continue to shop with us online as usual at www.debenhams.com."

Debenhams opened its Borehamwood branch in 2014 with then town deputy mayor and current Labour councillor Richard Butler invited to officially open the store with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Borehamwood Times:

Hordes of shoppers had gathered outside the new department store for the grand opening.

But in recent years, Debenhams as a whole has struggled, and on April 9, the company entered administration appointing FRP Advisory to oversee the process, casting a shadow over the future of its 22,000 staff.

On April 17, Debenhams confirmed seven store closures, not including Borehamwood, with the loss of 422 jobs.

The department store firm said it has agreed terms with landlords to continue trading at 120 of its 142 UK stores - but it has since been confirmed that Borehamwood was not a store in which it was able to agree terms.

The closest Debenhams is the new flagship store at intu Watford, which opened in late 2018 as part of a £180 million extension to the intu shopping centre.
