Bus passengers have raised concerns about plans to cut a service by 25 per cent.
Transport for London is considering reducing the 292 bus which runs through Borehamwood to every 20 minutes rather than every 15 minutes.
But for Michael Lawson, who has used the 292 for 20 years, he says the plans are “ridiculous” considering it “takes increasingly longer” to drive in and around the town.
Mr Lawson, who lives in Kenilworth Drive, and alights at nearby Manor Way, said: “Why are they reducing the service when the population of Borehamwood is going up? There is so much traffic that people actually don’t want to drive so they use public transport.
“We need better transport but they want to cut it.”
Mr Lawson says he used the service to get around town including the train station and medical centre but also uses it to get places like Edgware.
The 292 runs from Wetherby Road in Borehamwood to Colindale.
Elsa Reyes, who lives in Elstree, has also bemoaned the lack of public transport from her area especially as the 615 Uno service was withdrawn in August.
Hertsmere Labour leader Cllr Jeremy Newmark said his party have been warning about the possible cuts for a while.
He said: “We warned about the cuts at the last borough and county elections but we were accused of scaremongering. I call on Cllr Morris Bright, leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, to write to TfL making it clear Hertsmere opposes any cuts to local bus services in order to safeguard the well-being of people and our economy.”
Cllr Bright said: “Like all residents who use this service I am frustrated to hear TfL are cutting back on this bus route. I will not get involved in name calling with Labour who know full well these services are provided by TfL. We should be aiming protest at TfL together with assistance of our MP and councillor colleagues from all parties from surrounding London boroughs.”
A spokesman for TfL said: “Our analysis suggests that there is demand for a direct bus linking one side of the borough of Barnet to the other via Barnet town centre and Barnet Hospital, which is why we’ve proposed to extend the 384 to Edgware via Apex Corner, Mill Hill. The additional capacity that this creates on the busiest sections of the 292 mean that its frequency can be reduced to better meet demand.
"Our public consultation on these potential changes allows residents to feedback on our proposals to ensure they are good as can be.”
