A new exhibition celebrating a century of migration to Elstree and Borehamwood opened this week.
From Village To Town: Celebrating A Century Of Migration, which was put together by volunteers, includes interviews with over 50 local residents on their recollections and memories of coming to the borough.
At the heart of the exhibition are several audio posts where visitors can listen on traditional telephones to excerpts from some of the interviews. Personal objects, loaned by contributors and other members of the community, tell the stories of their moving and settling in Elstree and Borehamwood.
Councillor Brenda Batten, portfolio holder for leisure, culture and health, says: “The exhibition details the migrating history of the people of Elstree and Borehamwood, taking a look at the varied cultures and nationalities that make our town so diverse and inclusive.
“It is wonderful that so many residents have been able to take an active part in this exhibition, sharing their recollections and experiences. It will hopefully bring back many memories to visitors and serve as a fascinating insight for the young people of Elstree and Borehamwood.
“This exhibition has been 18 months in the making. I would like to recognise the hard work and continued enthusiasm of all the volunteers at the museum, as well as thank the people who have shared their stories.”
Filmed interviews and audio recordings conducted as part of the research for the exhibition are also available on the museum’s website here.
