Following your front page story about a street stabbing in Borehamwood (‘Neighbours fear for their safety after assault on man’, Borehamwood & Elstree Times, March 6), I would like to allay people’s fears.
A serious assault such as this is, of course, a very shocking incident to have occurred in Borehamwood and I can understand people’s concerns.
I am personally sorry that local people have been impacted by the actions of others who have shown no regard for the area.
We are conducting a thorough investigation into what happened and the events leading up to it, and are following a number of leads. We are extremely grateful to the community with the help and information received so far.
While a clear motive is yet to be established, at this stage we suspect this was a targeted attack and I would assure people that these types of incidents are rare.
We are looking at the possible catalysts for this incident, such as drug-related activity, and we are actively working to address this issue to prevent further assaults of this nature.
I would urge people to work with us and report any suspicions they have about drug abuse or dealing, or information about people they suspect being involved in crime, via the non-emergency number 101, or anonymously, via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. In an emergency, please dial 999.
The article also makes reference to an increase in violent crime in Borehamwood. The increase can partly be attributed to a change in the way crime is recorded in line with national crime recording standards.
While this cannot be solely attributed to the rise in incidents, I want to assure residents that we are actively working to reduce violent crime.
Part of this rise in violent crime relates to an increased reporting of domestic incidents and I am encouraged that victims feel confident to come forward.
We will continue to improve the service we offer to those at risk of domestic abuse to ensure we offer appropriate support and protect them from further harm.
