An unsung green space will be turned into a “haven for wildlife” after it was awarded a grant.

Composers Park, in Elstree, was given more than £56,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund, as well as £5,500 from Hertsmere Borough Council, to pay for new equipment and a pond.

The park takes its name from the surrounding streets, which are all named after famous composers.

Over the last two years, the authority has worked with experts from its Countryside Management Service which has created a series of diverse and colourful meadows.

Work has included creating a new pond, installing information boards, new play equipment and seating.

The entrance also includes a large treble clef to capture the attention of passers-by and encourage them to explore the park.

Councillor Morris Bright, Elstree Ward councillor and leader of the council, said: “Composers Park already provided a haven for wildlife and visitors alike with its colourful wildflower meadows, hedgerows and trees but the habitat restoration work has ensured it serves as an important resource for people as well as our local wildlife, well into the future."

Tony Bradford, head of countryside management service, added: “The main aim of the project was to enhance the park for people as well as wildlife. We were delighted to be asked by the council to take this initiative forward.

"It has been a rewarding project."
