Residents of North Finchley may be curious to see an enormous cardboard structure towering over artsdepot this afternoon.

Local people have come together today, Friday, August 7, to build the giant People's Tower and will bring it crashing back down this evening.

The free event is run by Circulate, a London-based outdoor touring network of theatres, and features the work of artist Oliver Grossetête.

Oliver's one-off design, created using only tape and cardboard, will be both realised and demolished in fewer than 12 hours.

Without the use of cranes or machines, each giant structure will be erected in a public space where any ready pair of hands can join in before gloriously demolishing it in one big crash of cardboard.

The work is the latest in a series of cardboard creations by the artist whose designs have been realised all over the world, with UK projects including constructions at Glastonbury Festival (2013), Torquay Festival (2013) and Merchant City Festival in Glasgow (2012).
