A COMMUNITY garden project in Elstree for people with autism and learning disabilities has got off the ground after receiving financial help from businesses in the area.
Following an appeal for help last month by Dimensions, a charity providing support for people with learning disabilities and autism, to create allotments, in Dagger Lane, landscaping company Arbour Design and Build, based in Borehamwood, have volunteered their support.
The land had been acquired but additional funding and materials were needed to help turn the dream of an allotment for people who attend the day service at the Dimensions run QEQM Resource Centre into reality.
Lauren Butler, project manager at Dimensions QEQM Centre, said: “We were overwhelmed by the offer of support from Arbour Design and Build.
“The centre is really grateful for all their help in getting the project up and running. It’s a dream come true for some of the people we support. They really wanted to grow their own vegetables and create their own garden and now this is all possible.”
Richard Bickler of Arbour Design and Build has persuaded a few of his contacts to help with the garden. Rob Taylor of Landescape will be working alongside Mr Bickler, Folia Europe Ltd have donated materials and Lynch Plant Hire will provide some of the machinery free of charge for the project.
Mr Bickler said: “When I learned of the project I wanted to be involved as I have been looking for ways to use the skills and resources we have to give something back to the community.”
